What is HOPE?

HOPE stands for Hypnotic Over-Ride Pain Elimination. It is a cutting-edge, evidence-informed system designed to retrain neural pathways.

The "Stuck Alarm" Analogy Think of your nervous system like a sophisticated house alarm.

  • Acute Pain is useful: If you touch a hot stove, the alarm rings to warn you to move your hand.

  • Chronic Pain is an error: The "burglar" (the injury) has fled, the window has been repaired, but the alarm is still ringing because the system is stuck in a loop.

  • The HOPE Protocol allows us to access the keypad of that alarm system. We acknowledge that the message has been received, and then we over-ride the circuit, effectively resetting the system to silence.

The HOPE Protocol: How It Works

Alongside HOPE, I utilise Noesitherapy (from the Greek noesis, meaning "thinking"). This profound method was developed by Dr. Angel Escudero to allow patients to undergo major surgery without chemical anaesthesia, purely by using the power of the mind.

Triggering the Vagotonic Response

Pain usually triggers a stress response (Sympathetic Nervous System), which tightens muscles and amplifies pain. Noesitherapy teaches you how to manually switch your body into a Vagotonic Response (Parasympathetic Nervous System).

One of the core biological indicators of this healing state is saliva production. When you are in pain or stressed, your mouth goes dry. I will teach you how to consciously maintain a specific "wet mouth" response. This sends an immediate biological signal to your brain that says: "I am safe. I am calm. There is no threat." Using Timeline Therapy, we safely revisit and resolve the emotional root of the tension. By clearing the anxiety from the past, your nervous system can finally stand down, allowing the physical body to relax.

2. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)

Pain has a "structure" in your mind. You might perceive it as having a colour (e.g., red), a shape (e.g., a sharp spike), or a movement (e.g., throbbing). Using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), we decode this structure and then scramble it. We might guide you to mentally change the colour to a cool blue, soften the shape, or spin the sensation in the opposite direction. By altering these "sub-modalities," we disrupt the neural pattern, often causing the pain to fade or vanish instantly.

This is a classic, powerful hypnotic technique where we teach your mind to create a sensation of numbness, coolness, or heavy comfort in your hand—as if you were wearing a thick, protective anaesthetic glove. Once you have established this numbness, you will learn to transfer that comfort to any other part of your body simply by touching it. This gives you an immediate, portable tool for relief that you can use anywhere.

Pain is a protective mechanism. It tells us when something is wrong (like a broken bone, infection, or tumour). It would be irresponsible to remove pain that is alerting you to an untreated condition.

  • The Goal: We are not "masking" undiagnosed illness. We are eliminating diagnosed, chronic, or unnecessary pain signals that persist despite medical treatment (such as arthritis, old injuries, migraines, or fibromyalgia).

When you live with chronic pain, it often feels like a loud, constant noise that you cannot escape. In medical settings, you are often asked to rate your pain from 1 to 10 simply to record how much you are suffering.

In the HOPE Protocol, we use the Pain Scale differently. We do not use it to measure suffering; we use it to measure control.

The Philosophy of Variability

The most frightening aspect of chronic pain is the feeling that it is permanent and unchangeable. However, during our sessions, if we can use Noesitherapy or Hypnotic Suggestion to move that number from an 8 down to a 5, even for a moment, we have proven a powerful neurological fact: Your pain is mutable. If your brain can turn it down by three points, it knows how to turn it down by six. We simply need to practice that pathway until it becomes your new default setting.

  • 0 (Psychological Anaesthesia): Complete silence. The signal is fully over-ridden. This is achievable using the Glove Anaesthesia and Noesitherapy techniques we practice.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Pain control uses a blend of Clinical Hypnosis and Noesitherapy. While Hypnosis is a psychological state, Noesitherapy is a biological one. We use physical triggers (like the "Wet Mouth" response) to force a chemical shift in your body. Even if you feel like you have a "busy mind" or struggle to relax, these biological triggers still work to dampen pain signals because they operate on the nervous system directly, bypassing the critical mind.

How many sessions will I need?

The HOPE Protocol is designed for rapid results. Many clients experience a significant shift in their pain levels (e.g., dropping from an 8 to a 4) in the very first session.

However, to permanently rewire old neural pathways and deal with any underlying trauma (using Timeline Therapy), a short course of treatment is usually recommended. Most clients achieve their goals within 4 to 6 sessions.

Do I need to stop taking my medication?

Absolutely not. I am a hypnotherapist, not a medical doctor. I will never ask you to alter your prescription. We work alongside your medical team. However, many clients find that as they master the Glove Anaesthesia and Noesitherapy techniques, they naturally feel less need for breakthrough pain relief. Any reduction in medication must always be discussed with and supervised by your prescribing doctor.

Will this cure my arthritis/fibromyalgia/injury?

It is vital to distinguish between healing the tissue and healing the signal. Hypnosis does not "cure" the structural degradation of a joint or knit a bone back together. However, it changes how your brain interprets the signals coming from that area. We treat the suffering, not the pathology.

By turning down the volume of the pain signal, we often find that inflammation reduces (due to the relaxation of the nervous system), and mobility improves, allowing you to return to a much higher quality of life.

Does this work online? Do I need to be in the room?

Surprisingly, hypnotherapy for pain is often more effective online. Pain is amplified by stress and unfamiliar environments (often called "White Coat Syndrome"). By working from your own home—sitting in your favourite chair or lying in your own bed—you are already in a clearer state of safety. Because we are working with your mind and nervous system, not physically manipulating your body, a secure video connection via Google Meet is all we need to achieve profound results.

Is it safe to "turn off" pain? Won't I hurt myself?

This is the most common question I receive. The answer lies in the HOPE Protocol's "Safety Valve". During our sessions, we install a subconscious instruction that distinguishes between chronic pain (useless noise) and acute pain (a warning signal). You can achieve comfort for your chronic condition, but if you were to suffer a new injury or move in a way that endangers your body, your nervous system is programmed to instantly override the comfort and alert you.
