Addiction Release Therapy, or ART, is my structured approach to helping people break addiction and compulsive patterns by working on what is happening underneath the behaviour.
Rather than focusing only on stopping the action itself, ART looks at:
what triggers the urge
what emotional need the behaviour is serving
what part of the mind is still attached to it
what identity story is keeping it alive
what needs to change for the person to feel stable without it
The aim is not simply to “resist better”.The aim is to reduce the pull of the pattern itself.
ART is designed for people who say things like:
“I’ve tried everything.”
“I stop for a while, then go back.”
“I know better, but I still do it.”
“Part of me wants to stop, part of me still wants it.”
“I’m exhausted by the constant loop.”
It can be applied to a wide range of patterns, including:
alcohol
cocaine and stimulants
cannabis
gambling
porn compulsion
food and sugar
smoking and vaping
prescription medication misuse
emotional dependency
retroactive jealousy and reassurance loops
ART follows a framework I call the A.R.T.I.S.T. Method.
We identify the loop clearly: triggers, urges, routines, emotional drivers, and high-risk moments.
We reduce the emotional fuel beneath the pattern — shame, stress, fear, grief, pressure, or overwhelm.
We recondition the trigger-response pathway so the old urge loses strength.
We work with the internal conflict between the part that wants to stop and the part that still wants relief.
We build practical tools and rehearsals for real-life triggers, relapse-risk moments, and emotional spikes.
We strengthen the future-self identity that no longer needs the old behaviour to cope.
Talking can be useful. Insight can be useful. Understanding can be useful.
But many people already understand a great deal about their behaviour. They still feel stuck.
That is because insight alone does not always update the nervous system.
ART is designed to be more structured than open-ended talking and more psychologically grounded than a simple “just stop” plan.
Depending on the person, it can include:
clinical hypnotherapy
NLP pattern work
parts work
CBT-style reframing
relapse rehearsal
nervous system regulation tools
The combination depends on the pattern and the person.
At some stage, addiction often becomes linked to identity:
“I’m just like this.”“This is my thing.”“This is how I cope.”“I can’t function without it.”
That is why ART is not just about stopping behaviour. It is about helping the person become someone who no longer needs the pattern in the same way.
That identity shift is often what makes change hold.
ART is usually delivered through one of two structured pathways:
Best suited to clearer, earlier-stage patterns where the trigger chain is more contained and the person has a relatively stable environment.
Best suited to more layered patterns where relapse cycles, shame, trauma-linked drivers, identity attachment, or repeated internal conflict are present.
The purpose of the suitability call is to decide which is the right fit.
The deeper goal of ART is not just “don’t do the behaviour”.
The deeper goal is:
calmer triggers
less shame
more self-trust
less inner conflict
more stable decision-making
more freedom in everyday life
That is what makes ART different. It is about changing the pattern at the root so the person can live differently, not just cope differently.
ART is built on a simple belief:
People are not broken. They are patterned.
When the pattern changes, the future can change too.
